Banarasi weaving is brocade: the gold-tone thread is woven into the cloth as it is made, not printed or stitched on afterwards, so the motifs sit slightly raised and move with the fabric.

Two vocabularies dominate the tradition, and both are here: the kairi, or paisley, and the jaal, a lattice of small interlocking motifs. On this saree the butis stay light across the body so the drape stays calm, and the weight of the pattern is kept for the border and pallu.
